Steven W. McLaughlin received the B.S. degree from Northwestern University in 1985, the M.S.E. degree from Princeton University in 1986, and the Ph.D. degree from the University of Michigan in 1992, all in electrical engineering. From 1992-1996 he was on the Electrical Engineering faculty at the Rochester Institute of Technology. He joined the School of ECE at Georgia Tech in September 1996 where is now Ken Byers Professor of ECE. He is also Deputy Director of Georgia Tech Lorraine – the European Campus of the Georgia Institute of Technology – in Metz, France. He currently shares his time between the Atlanta and Metz campuses. In 2005, he was President of the IEEE Information Theory Society.

As Deputy Director of GT-Lorraine he is the primary liaison between the campuses in Metz and Atlanta and is involved in all activities on the 300+ student campus including academic, research, economic development, student recruiting, housing, visas and immigration, export control, contracts, and personnel issues. He was previously Director of Research of the GT-Lorraine campus and played a leading role in the formation of the GT-CNRS research unit ({em UMI 2958}), a unique Franco-American research laboratory involving four institutions and more than thirty faculty, students, and staff in the areas of advanced materials and secure networks. He is the PI for the Franco-American Doctoral Network, a developing consortium of seventeen US and French universities dedicated to large-scale exchange of PhD students. Dr. McLaughlin has also lead research, innovation and business development initiatives in Portugal, India, Korea, and Japan, some of which are ongoing.

His research interests are in the general area of communications and information theory. His research group has on-going projects in the areas of turbo, LDPC, and constrained codes for magnetic and optical recording; FEC and equalization for wireless and optical networks, quantum key distribution and data security; and theory of error control coding. He has published more than 200 papers in journals and conferences and holds 26 US patents. He has served as the research and thesis advisor to more than 50 students at the bachelors, masters, doctoral and post-doctoral levels.

He received the Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers (PECASE) in 1997 where he was cited by President Clinton “for leadership in the development of high-capacity, nonbinary optical recording formats.” He also received the National Science Foundation CAREER award for this work. He received (with Dr. David Warland at UC-Davis) the Information Storage Industries Consortium Technical Achievement Award in 2002 for “pioneering work in the development of multilevel optical disk storage technology”. From 1999-2003 he was also a Principal Scientist for Calimetrics where this work was commercialized. He received the Friend of the Graduate Student Award in 2002 from the GT Graduate Student Association.

He is a Fellow of the IEEE and currently serves as an Associate Editor for Coding Techniques for the IEEE Transaction on Information Theory. He served as the Publications Editor for that journal from 1995-1999. He co-edited (with Sergio Verdu) Information Theory: 50 Years of Discovery (Wiley/IEEE Press, 1999). He has also served on the IEEE Publications Activities Board (1998-2001) and is a former Secretary of the IEEE Atlanta Section (2000).
